IN PREPARATION FOR YOUR BFR

WHAT'S REQUIRED?

FAR § 61.56   Flight review.

(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (b) and (f) of this section, a flight review consists of a minimum of 1 hour of flight training and 1 hour of ground training. The review must include:

(1) A review of the current general operating and flight rules of part 91 of this chapter; and

(2) A review of those maneuvers and procedures that, at the discretion of the person giving the review, are necessary for the pilot to demonstrate the safe exercise of the privileges of the pilot certificate.

HOW TO PREPARE?

If you've been flying frequently and reading training & flying materials, you may need very little preparation. You should consider what you'd like to work on.  Smoother, more reproducible landings? Emergency procedures?

If you haven't flown much and/or are fairly weak on rules and regs, invest  some time in reading up on the regulations, aerodynamics, your aircraft's POH, weight & balance and cross country flight planning.

1)Take the "Flight Review Prep Guide" Course on the FAA website (you'll need to register, free)

2)Do a VFR flight plan -- from your home airport to a Class D or Class C airport at least 300 miles away

if you're IFR rated, also plan this trip IFR and assume destination is at "minimums"

3)Do a W&B for this trip and assume you are flying with two passengers weighing 150 and 190 lbs and carrying a total of 50 lbs of luggage

(You are free to use any flight planning tools you'd like)

4)Take at least one of the following courses (on the AOPA ASF website). You must be an AOPA member.

Say It Right: Mastering Radio Communication

Know Before You Go: Navigating Today’s Airspace

Weather Wise: Air Masses and Fronts

Weather Wise: Ceiling and Visibility

Weather Wise: Thunderstorms and ATC

Essential Aerodynamics: Stalls, Spins, and Safety

WHAT TO EXPECT?

1)Schedule a 1/2 day for this review.  We may be done sooner, but on average we'll go 3-4 hours.

2)We'll start our ground session by using your flight plan to discuss flight regulations--airspace, fuel requirements, your currency. We'll also discuss weather planning, setting minimums and decision making. We'll discuss aerodynamics & maneuvering flight and its implications in various phases of flight.  We'll also discuss SOPS for your aircraft.

3)At a minimum we'll do slow flight, stalls & recovery, steep turns, unusual attitudes, emergency procedures and a variety of landings.  A whole menu of additional items on which you might want to work can be found here.

The FAA's Pilot Proficiency Program has been completely revamped.  Excellent online courses are available and the flight portions focus on those things the flight portion of a BFR would focus upon--but provides more specific instruction. RECOMMENDED!
